The Carlucci American International School of Lisbon (CAISL), accredited
by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and ECIS,
was founded in 1956 to provide an American-type educational program
for children of families of diplomats, US military, international,
American and Portuguese business.
The American curriculum prepares students to enter institutions
of higher learning in the USA, Portugal, and the UK. The IB Diploma
Program and IB certificates are offered. AP examinations are also
available in American history, art, biology, calculus, chemistry,
English literature, modern European history, and French. Specialists
provide help to students with special needs in reading, English-as-a-Second-Language,
and mild learning disabilities. Standardized tests are administered
throughout the school to measure pupil progress. All students receive
instruction on computers and have access to and use the school libraries.
Of the 67 professional staff members, 25 are US citizens, and 27
have earned graduate degrees. Twenty percent of the students are
US citizens, 51% are Portuguese, and 29% represent 26 other nationalities.
Extra-curricular activities include Model UN, yearbook, drama,
photo and computer clubs, and musical and drama groups. Students
in grades 10-12, with qualifying grades, are eligible for membership
of the National Honor Society. Sport competitions are scheduled
with six other local schools and schools in other countries. There
are school teams in basketball, soccer, track and field, volleyball,
and cross-country.
Admission is based upon records from previous schools, and the
ability of CAISL to offer a program appropriate for the needs of
the applicant.
